Experiencing Old Residence Hanok Stay in Myeongjae House

Myeongjae House is a cozy and approachable place without tall walls and gates. The Papyeong Yun clan has worked to preserve the house and hand it down from generation to generation in honor of the family legacy. The layout of the house is unique in that the men’s quarters are easily accessible from the courtyard, unlike most other houses of the era that had the men’s quarters sitting in the back.
The house offers accommodation to modern travelers through its “Hanok (traditional home) Stay” program. Yun Wan-sik, a descendant of “Myeongjae” Yun Jeung, has maintained the house in impeccable condition. Visitors can chat with members of the Yun family after breakfast, taking a stroll around the house and drink cups of tea on the main wooden floor. They can learn about how the Yun family has preserved the house for hundreds of years, and how life used to be for noble “yangban” families.

Noseo Seojae Library, Villagers’ Guest Study Room

The house also shares its library with villagers and tourists. According to Yun Wan-sik, a descendent of “Myeongjae” Yun Jeung, the best libraries are the noisy ones where people read books and passionately discuss them with others. “I am always happy whenever I see villagers read books in the Noseo Seojae Library,” he said.

Beach Trekking Taean Haebyeongil (Walking Trails)

Taean Haean National Park is famous for its beautiful coastal scenery and seaside forest. Visitors can stroll in Gomsollim Forest known for its dense pine forests while hearing the roaring waves of the sea. Some sections of the walking trails are barrier-free, making them more accessible for the disabled and elders.

Baragil Course (From Hakampo to Sinduri, 12 km, 3 hours and 40 minutes)

The Baragil Course took its name from Ara, which means sea. It’s a course that includes a forest that looks over the sea and surrounded by the Gomsollim Forest and Sinduri sand dunes, the country’s biggest sand dunes.

Saetbyeolgil Course (From Kkotji to Hwangpohang, 1 km, about 4 hours)

The Saetbyeolgil Course stretches from Kkotji Beach, known for its spectacular sunset, and Hwangpohang port. The course also includes Byeongsulman, which was a military strategic point during the Goryeo Dynasty and where Sambyeolcho, an elite military unit, stationed and trained against the Mongol invasion. Visitors can also enjoy unique scenery created by strange rocks and bizarre stones on Ssalsseokeunyeo Beach. The name of the beach comes from “rotten rice” as the ships loaded with rice were often stranded here during the Joseon Dynasty.

Lakeside Trekking Daecheong Lake Trail

Cheongnamdae, Another Cheong Wa Dae in Warm Southern Land

Cheongnamdae is the nation’s only presidential villa that was used as a vacation home for six presidents over the past 20 years. The site was open to the public in 2003. Visitors can explore the places where the presidents actually used.

The Daecheongho Lake was created after Daecheong Dam was completed in 1980. A driving course was built around the lake, allowing drivers to enjoy a scenic forest that’s 200 to 300 meters above sea level. The mountainous peaks submerged by the lake resembles an archipelago on land. The upper stream of the lake is home to migratory birds, including white herons. The site also has a path filled with chrysanthemums that is a popular tourist attraction.
