Taean

Surrounded by water on three sides, Taean was an international gateway but also suffered frequent invasions by the Japanese. Taean is an abbreviation of Guktaeminan, which means for the seas to be tranquil and smooth and the people of the country to be comfortable.

Taean was the port where emissaries arrived from China. It was also a military strategic point where vessels moved up and down the coastal route transporting grain that was collected as tax.

Taeaneupseong Fortress
Taeaneupseong Fortress is an important historical heritage that shows the construction techniques of the early Joseon period. While it was built for coastal defense, the fortress was also unique in that it served critical administrative functions for the area.

The Taean Town Hall is currently located in the site of an old Joseon government office that edged the fortress.

It’s thought that the office, called Taeangaeksa, would have been huge as it was used as a facility to greet Chinese emissaries entering the country through Anheungpo Port.

Remembering Chinese General Who Died for Joseon Sunguisa Shrine

The Sunguisa Shrine was designed to commemorate loyalty and filial piety of three generations of the Soju Ga clan _ Ga Yu-yak, Ga Sang and Ga Chim. Ga Yu-yak was a prominent Chinese general who was sent to Joseon and led the battle to victory in Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. When Japan invaded Joseon again in 1597, Ga Yu-yak came to Joseon along with his son General Ga Sang and grandson Ga Chim. Ga Yu-yak and his son Ga Sang died in the battle with the Joseon troops in Busan against the Japanese. After the war, Ga Chim wanted to return to China but couldn’t get a ship and settled in Taean. His descendants thrived here as the Soju Ga clan and kept honor of their ancestors who devoted themselves to defend Joseon.
