Dangjin

The port city of Dangjin in Chungcheongnam-do Province was the hometown of “Yeonam” Park Jiwon, a Joseon official and thinker who was known for his passion in practical sciences and learning advanced technologies through China’s Qing Dynasty.
When Park served as a governor of Myeoncheon-gun of Dangjin, he was credited for relieving the burdens of the people by reducing bureaucratic red tapes and using his personal resources to provide food to people in need during years of famine.
He wrote “Gwanongsocho,” or the “Book Advocating the Improvement of Farming Methods," reflecting his reformative thoughts on the farming and devoted it to King Jeongjo.

Exploring Past Through Traces of Governor Park Ji-won Myeoncheoneupseong Fortress

Along with Seosan and Taean, Dangjin served as a sea hub connecting Korea and China and was also a crucial location for military strategy.

The fortress in Seongan Village was built to defend against foreign invasions and protect an administrative hub that was used until the late Joseon period. The village is now a major tourist attraction, coexisting with the past and the present.

Goljeongji Pond, Geongonilchojeong Pavilion

Goljeongji Pond is located in the Myeoncheoneupseong Fortress. When Park Ji-won served as governor of Myeoncheon-gun for three years, he refurbished the abandoned pond and had it used for the farming use. Park built Geongonilchojeong Pavilion on an artificial island built in the middle of the pond, which could be reached by a stone bridge.
The pavilion was named after a phrase of a poem written by Du Fu, a Chinese poet and the words mean “a small pavilion between the sky and the earth.” Confucian scholars of Myeoncheonhyanggyo Local Confucian School used the pavilion to study and enjoy poems.
