Buyeo (Around Geumgang River)

Pavilions constructed on hill sites are designed to celebrate the surrounding natural landscape, reflecting a way of life of “seonbi” or virtuous Confucian scholars. Seonbi used the pavilions for studies, leisure activities and often just to enjoy beautiful scenery. The pavilions were often filled with noble men, poets and painters who practiced their arts and developed friendships.

The pavilions looking over the Geumgang River are one of the tourist gems of Buyeo, which is known for its rich Confucian heritage.

Symbol of Loyalty to the King Subukjeong Pavilion

Just before a 1623 coup that expelled Prince Gwanghae from the throne and brought King Injo to power, government official Kim Heung-guk was offered to join the takeover but refused because he couldn’t serve two kings.
He then deserted his government post and founded the Subukjeong Pavilion on the Jaondae Cliff that looked over the Baengmagang River and spent the rest of his life in the area. The pavilion was named after his pen name, “Subuk.” These days, a cruise ship shuttles between the Jaondae Cliff and the Nakwaam Rock after departing from a wharf built under the pavilion.

The Nakwaam Rock is famous for a legend that some 3,000 court ladies who served the king of the ancient Baekje Kingdom leaped to their deaths from the rock after the kingdom was brought to its demise at the hands of the neighboring Silla Kingdom. The Jaondae Cliff has a legend too, that the rocks on the cliff got warm whenever a king of Baekje visited there.

Carrying Legend of Fairy Ongnyeobong Peak

Ongnyeobong Peak is famous for a legend that a fairy landed on the peak after descending from heaven and failed to go back after being enchanted by the moonlight. The peak provides a picturesque view of the broad Nonsan plains and waterways flowing through a mountainous landscape. A huge rock under the zelkova tree at the peak is inscribed with names and poems written by old poets and painters.
